my finch is not perching, just sitting on the cage floor?
I have a pair of fire finches. The female is sitting on the cage floor and won’t perch. she is not puffed up. When I look into the cage she fans her tail feathers out. I brought the cage down and put my hand inside to see if she would fly away. She tried, but only got a couple of inches off the ground and grabbed a hold of the cage and hung on to the bars. I withdrew my hand and she settled back onto the floor. I have a seed hopper on the floor but no water available on the floor. I just put a water dispenser on the floor as well. I look in on the birds several times each day, and about 6 hours ago she was in the nest, sitting on a single egg. The egg has been in the nest for more than a week, and I do not believe it is fertile.
could this bird be injured? Her legs look ok, she was able to grasp the cage bars with both feet. Might she be egg bound? If so, what could I do?
Sounds like she is getting ready to lay another egg. Continue to monitor her and see what she does within the next few hours.
If you do find that she is egg bound, the only thing you can do is take her to go see an avian vet before its too late. Hope she gets better!
